Karen Jones Meadows is an award winning author, actress and producer who writes for adult and young audiences with an emphasis on creating dynamic characters in stories that are universal in theme, passion and resolution. Her work reflects the diversity of the world's populations, thoughts and cultures. Ms. Jones Meadows' writing has garnered awards such as The United Minority Media Association, Inc., 2005 Special Recognition Award; The Drama League of New York Playwright Award; First Place International Short Film Award, Writer/Producer, Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame; Certificate For Outstanding Accomplishment, California State Assembly; Award of Achievement, Coalition For A Non-Violent City, For Youth Investment; Award For Outstanding Accomplishment in Culture and Community Service, Black Women's Forum; Cornerstone Award, Penumbra Theatre; Distinguished McGee Professor of Writing Award, Davidson College; and many commissions and inclusions in publications such as, The National Black Drama Anthology: Eleven Plays from America's Leading African-American Theaters, Edited by Woodie King, Jr. Ms. Jones Meadows' award winning plays are HARRIET'S RETURN, HENRIETTA, MAJOR CHANGES, and TAPMAN. For youths she's written SALA CINDERELLA, S.O.U.L.: Stars Of Urban Life, THE CHALLENGE: Sophia and William Meet Chesnutt and Twain, and EVERYBODY'S SECRET. Her plays have been performed in prestigious venues such as Crossroads Theatre, Geffen Playhouse, The Kennedy Center, Alley Theatre, Penumbra Theatre, Plowshares Theatre, The Negro Ensemble Company, and The Doris Duke Theatre. In demand as a speaker and workshop leader, Ms. Jones Meadows conducts interactive seminars, WRITE THROUGH THE SOUL and DRAMA AS A HEALING ART, for people of all ages, exploring the dramatic impact of any creative writing form as a means to heal the spirit, mind, emotions and physical expression of the author and audience. Through The Association of International Schools In Africa, Ms. Jones Meadows toured The Ivory Coast, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa as a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator training administrators and teachers through hands on activities in the use and power of drama curriculums in schools. Ms. Jones Meadows has also consulted for museums, publishing houses and service organizations throughout the US. As an actress Ms. Jones Meadows took a long hiatus, but returned to the stage in 2003 starring in HARRIET'S RETURN to rave reviews. She has also been lead or principal actress in 28 commercials, four feature and television films including: Critical Condition, The Half Pint Flask and From Uncle Tom To Jim Crow; and numerous plays including Wedding Band, and 'Night Mother. She's produced for Comedy Central, Fox Television, NY and independent venues. |
